Douglas Kent Hall



Douglas Kent Hall is a 35-year veteran photographer, filmmaker, writer and poet. His is the recipient of numerous accolades for his work, most recently the 2005 New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. Through his relentless determination, passion and creativity he published over twenty books to date. He's also contributed to more than ten films, and received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his 1974 film, The Great American Cowboy.

Born at the border of the Ute Reservation in eastern Utah, Hall grew up immersed in the American West, surrounded by real life cowboys and Indians. His cultural insight and perspective reveals a side of the West never before seen. In fact, iconic Western images compose the preponderance of his archive.

Hall's photographs are displayed in the collections of numerous museums, exhibitions and public portfolios across the nation including the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, the Albuquerque Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Brooklyn Museum in New York and the Western Americana Collection at Princeton University.

Hall's books include The Education of a Bodybuilder (featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger), 1979; Working Cowboys, 1984; New Mexico: Voices in an Ancient Landscape, 1995; and Prison Tattoos, 1997.

Hall's achievements and style are a true inspiration to generations of aspiring photographers.
