Documentary Photography: Old Images, New images, and the Lessons Learned!

Ken Light has photographed America for over 35 years. He started with a Vietnam protest in the late 1960's and moved on to books about industrial and migrant workers, the U.S.-Mexican border, poverty in the Mississippi Delta and Texas death row. His newest work Coal Hollow, completed with his wife Melanie, looks at the death of coal culture in rural West Virginia. At the BigWednesday Show, Light will give an overview of these projects and talk about the most current collaboration of images, text and sound that he and Melanie produced for the project.

A variety of Ken's books will be available for sale before and after his presentation.

David Leeson

David Leeson has been a staff photographer for The Dallas Morning News since 1984. He has also worked for the Abilene Reporter News and The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. His assignments have taken him to more than 60 countries and 11 conflict zones in 20 years. He has been a finalist for the Pulitzer three times and has won two Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards among many other regional, state and national awards.

In 2003, he was an embedded journalist with soldiers from the the US Army 3rd Infantry Division. He was with the troops for six weeks for an Army record setting 23-days of sustained enemy contact in frontline action during the march to Baghdad, He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his coverage of the conflict.
