David Leeson

David Leeson has been a staff photographer for The Dallas Morning News since 1984. He has also worked for the Abilene Reporter News and The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.

His assignments have taken him to more than 60 countries and 11 conflict zones in 20 years.

He has been a finalist for the Pulitzer three times and has won two Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards among many other regional, state and national awards.

In the fall of 2000, he began shooting digital video for The Dallas Morning News making him the first news photographer in the nation shooting video on a full-time basis. Since then he has completed more than 70 short features and seven documentaries. His videos have won him a regional Emmy Award, a National Headliners Award and the coveted Edward R. Murrow award for best television documentary. He was also a finalist for best short film at the 2004 USA Film Festival.

Leeson was honored in 2005 by the Video Association of Dallas with a new annual awarde: The David Leeson Prize for Innovation in Art, Technology and Society to be given to an emerging artist who demonstrates a commitment to progressive social change. Funds will be used toward the production of a video essay enlightening others on an issue or issues of social concern.

In 2003, he was an embedded journalist with soldiers from the the US Army 3rd Infantry Division. He was with the troops for six weeks for an Army record setting 23-days of sustained enemy contact in frontline action during the march to Baghdad, He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his coverage of the conflict.
